British Prime Minister Winston Churchill's address to the British people on Victory Day over Fascism, May 8, 1945

God bless you all. This is our victory! It is the victory of freedom in all lands. Never in our long history have we witnessed such a glorious day.

Everyone, men and women, gave their all. Everyone tried. Neither the long years, nor the dangers, nor the sudden attacks of the enemy could weaken the spiritual strength of the British nation.

Dear friends, now is your hour. This is not just a victory for any party or class. This is the triumph of the entire British nation.

We were the first on the ancient island to raise the sword against tyranny. After some time, we were left alone in front of the terrifying military force. We were completely alone for a whole year.

And so we stood, alone. Did any of us want to give up? Have any of us dropped our shoulders?

The lights were going out and the bombs were falling. However, every man, woman and child of this country did not even think of giving up the fight. London can handle it.

That's how we came back from the jaws of death, from the mouth of hell, before the whole world was shocked. Will the reputation and faith of the English men and women of this generation ever fade?

I tell you, years will pass, and not only the people of this island, but every people of the world, among whom the dove of liberty sings, will remember what we have accomplished and say:

Don't cut off Sasso, don't give in to violence and tyranny, go ahead and face death if need be.

Now we are emerging from the bloody battle - a terrible enemy is leveled to the ground and awaits our judgment and mercy.

Now is the time to start reviving our homes and do everything we can to build a country on this land where everyone has a chance and everyone has a duty. We must pay our debt to our fellow countrymen, and then to our brave American allies, whom Japan so callously and treacherously attacked.

We will support them.

Even if the battle is hard, we will not lose.
